About
Newquay Safe is a resort wide initiative to tackle crime and disorder, anti social behaviour and make sure all visitors and residents to the town are able to enjoy the very best Newquay has to offer both during the day and at night.There are over 20 agencies and local groups who are involved with and support the year round activity of Newquay Safe. The lead agency is the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary led by dedicated Newquay Police Officers working in the Night time Economy and Neighbourhood teams.
The Police and Community measures introduced and operated by Newquay Safe throughout the year affect all visitors to Newquay not just younger visitors or under 18’s. Thanks to the work of Newquay Safe and the supporting groups and agencies Newquay is a developing resort attracting a wide range of visitors throughout the year including families.
Newquay Police are resolute in their support for the changing image of the town and operate a “no-nonsense” approach to safeguarding our visitors. If you are causing a problem in Newquay, including wearing offensive clothing and carrying offensive inflatable’s and do not cooperate with the Police or other agencies you risk being arrested or excluded for a set time from the town.
In the case of under 18 visitors Newquay Safe is taking action against under age drinking through Challenge 21 where either a passport or photo driving licence must be presented when buying alchohol, tackling Proxy Buying where over 18’s or adults and even parents buy drinks for under age visitors and expelling drunk or offensive under 18’s immediately by calling parents or next of kin to collect them immediately as well as making sure that what happens in Newquay does not stay in Newquay – any offences or interaction with the Newquay Safe teams will result in detailed letters being sent to their home or schools whichever is appropriate.
Please be aware that anti - social behaviour, drink and drug related crime and behaviour likely to cause distress to others will not be tolerated in Newquay. The measures used to keep Newquay Safe are outlined below;
CHALLENGE 25 - Operated by all pubs, clubs and off licences. If you try to purchase alcohol and look under 25 you will be asked for ID. The only acceptable forms of ID are a passport or photo driving licence.
DESIGNATED PUBLIC PLACE ORDERS -Designated Public Place Orders are in place for all areas in Newquay and give the Police the power to confiscate alcohol from anyone they believe may consume it in a public place. The order applies to the whole of Newquay town including grassed areas and beaches.
OPERATION BRUNEL - Police with Police dogs and drug detectors meet and greet trains arriving at Newquay railway station. They will confiscate alcohol from under 18’s and give advice and information on alcohol issues in Newquay.
OPERATION LONGBOW The Police working with campsites and public and private transport providers work together to prevent under 18’s taking alcohol onto buses travelling to the town.
OPERATION TOUCHDOWN a similar meet and greet operation to Brunel above but meeting visitors as they leave the arrivals lounge at Newquay Cornwall Airport.
STREET SAFE operates throughout the evening from a portacabin in the town centre, staffed by medical personal and approved volunteers. Streetsafe provides help and refuge for the vulnerable and minor medical treatment for the injured.
STREET PASTORS working with StreetSafe and the Police the Pastors are accredited volunteers from the local church and are on the streets in the
early hours offering help, advice and support.
ALCO METERS - similar to breathalysers and enable police to check under 18’s getting onto buses and trying to enter clubs and pubs for previous consumption of alchohol. They can also indicate if soft drinks contain alcohol.
EXODUS – operates for the first two weeks of July and is a scheme that offers
alcohol free, under 18 entertainment supervised by experienced youth workers. Transport to and from the alcohol free night clubs is provided and there is also discounted entry to daytime activities.
Newquay has a variety of “Watch” schemes where like minded individuals and groups are linked by radio to report on suspicious activity and inform the Police of any problems. Led by the accurate and pin sharp CCTV throughout the town there is a “Shopwatch” scheme, “Taxiwatch” scheme and “Pubwatch” scheme.
