Newquay town was built up around its fishing with the ‘new quay', being built around 1439 and it is still home to a strong fishing economy and community today. Newquay harbour has 20 registered fishing vessels with crews using pots for shellfish such as brown crab, spider crab and lobster, handlines and nets for species such as bass, ling, pollack and mackerel. There is lots going on around the harbour so be sure to head out that way during your holiday.
Newquay Fish Festival
Now in its 6th year, Newquay Fish Festival gives Newquay an opportunity to both celebrate its thriving and historic local fishing industry and showcase its bustling little harbour. Taking place in September each year, it has proved to be a hit with both residents and visitors alike, with practical cookery demonstrations by local chefs, hotels and restaurants being able to promote local fresh fish and shellfish and locally available produce, a fresh fish barbeque, live music including Newquay male voice choir, wildlife watching boat trips and even a sandcastle competition!
