Cornwall Council, Local Safeguarding Children's Board, Devon & Cornwall Constabulary, Cornwall Fire Brigade and Chamber of Commerce have formed Newquay Safe Accommodation to put together an information booklet and education programme to raise awareness of the Duty of Care that all accommodation providers have when accepting unaccompanied under 18 yr olds at their premises. The majority of this age group who come to Newquay will stay at either the campsites or in the multi-occupancy premises (surf lodges), and for many it is their first time away from home without adult supervision.
The Children Act 1989 makes clear provision for safeguarding children (and any visitor under 18yrs of age is a child in the eyes of the law) and the aim of the Newquay Safe Accommodation group is to ensure all accommodation providers are aware of their duty of care. The aim of the project is twofold...first and foremost to safeguard children, and secondly to protect staff by ensuring employers provide the correct provision as required by statute.
But the project also goes further than this and provides information regarding Drug and Alcohol awareness, health issues and well being, and fire protection.
All known accommodation providers will be sent a copy of the accommodation booklet and there this will be reinforced through further training and assistance to ensure businesses maximum opportunity to ensure they comply with the requirements of the Children Act.
