15th June 2018
This week we have an exciting blog post written by our friends at Cornish Horizons. They are one of Cornwall’s leading accredited agencies with over 700 cottages throughout Cornwall including the popular locations of Fowey, Looe, Padstow, St Ives and Porthleven. Over to you, Cornish Horizons!
A Guide to Newquay
When you think of great holiday destinations in England, Newquay will undoubtedly feature in that list. It is a Cornish gem with so much to offer, from beaches and festivals, to aquariums and zoos, Newquay definitely has something for everybody.
If your interests lean more towards the literary, this stretch of coastline is known to have inspired Winston Graham to write the Poldark novels too!
Festivals
During the summer months, Newquay becomes one of Cornwall’s hotspots for festivals. The most popular being the Boardmasters surfing event which is held annually on Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay and is considered to be one of the biggest events on the British surfing calendar. The Electric Beach music festival at Watergate coincides with the surfing to create a vibrant atmosphere that attracts hundreds of visitors to the area.
Events
And, just like many other seaside resorts, there is the annual Newquay Carnival Week at the end of June, which is one not to be missed. This is the perfect week for families, with a host of events, activities and attractions to keep the kids entertained including art and craft workshops, Newquay Town Band and much more.
Beaches
There are no less than 11 beaches dotted along the coastline in and around Newquay, offering stretches of beautiful golden sand and plenty of family fun. Of course, many are also a mecca for the surfers who flock here all year round to ride the world-renowned waves. A number of the beaches are also dog friendly, so your best friend won't be left out either. Some of our favourites include Fistral, Lusty Glaze, Porth and Holywell Bay (pictured below).
Attractions
There is so much to see and do in Newquay; why not take a boat trip from Newquay Harbour and head out to sea for a fishing trip or try your hand at some of the water-sport activities on offer. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a seal popping its head above the water! There’s also the idyllic Trenance Gardens with its boating lake where you can hire rowing boats. Newquay Zoo is nearby, and a riding stables from which you can explore on horseback the Gannel Estuary, one of the many areas of outstanding natural beauty Cornwall has to offer.
