Newquay Isn’t Just for Summer!
If you’re wondering when the best season is to take your holiday to Newquay, the answer is whatever the season! Most people think of Newquay as a summer holiday destination, but the truth is there is so much to do whatever the time of year and whatever the weather! It all depends on what you want to see and do. So, over the next few pages we have put together some things to do and see in every season. Because each one has something different to offer in Newquay.
Spring
We thought we had better start off with one of our favourite seasons… Spring! In Spring the nights begin to draw out, the sun finally starts to make a warming appearance. Bird and gull songs echo throughout the town, and the flower beds are bright and blossoming down at Trenance Gardens! That’s when you truly know Spring has arrived in Newquay. Spring is the shoulder season in Cornwall, as greater numbers of visitors start to arrive along with the rise in temperatures! It’s not quite as busy as the Summer, so it’s the perfect time to visit! So, say hello to Spring! Because we have come up with some ‘blooming’ fabulous ideas if you’re looking to visit Newquay in this beautiful season.
Take a Boat Trip at Newquay Harbour
Breathe in the Cornish sea air this Spring and take a boat trip from Newquay’s Historical Harbour! There are all types of excursions to choose from. If you want to catch a glimpse of Newquay’s marine wildlife, you can take a trip out to sea with Newquay Sea Safari’s. You'll get the chance to see dolphins, basking sharks, porpoise and lots more! They’ll even take you to seal cove so you can admire Newquay’s grey seals in their natural environment. Or, maybe you’d like to catch something yourself for dinner? At Newquay Harbour you can also go on a relaxing fishing trip with Fish Newquay. What better way to get out and about (and on the water) this Spring!
Go on a Picnic
Why not go outside and enjoy a delicious homemade lunch together in the Spring sunshine? Not much can beat a pretty picnic in the sun! Our perfect Spring picnic spot in Newquay is the newly restyled Killacourt - a grassy and pathed leisure area that offers uninterrupted views of the sea, other areas of the town, and the iconic island house at Towan Beach. The area is now more accessible than ever and brand new for 2021 it features a café with accompanying small shopping outlets, occupied by local craftspeople and retailers. Situated right in the centre of town, the Killacourt is a great place for a pit stop in the hustle and bustle of it all. There is often music playing at the completely refurbished bandstand and seating area now better able to showcase the talents of local musicians, silver bands and entertainers. It's definitely worth passing by to see what's on.
Summer
Hoorah, Summer! The warm air, the sea breeze to keep you cool, the seagull calls, the smell of pasties throughout the town… You can’t but love the Summer season in Newquay. Remember that because Summer is the warmest and, some might say, most beautiful time of year, it’s also the most popular and the busiest. You’ll see the sea turn a turquoise shade of blue, dolphins, seals and other animals come to life in the waters, and the sun’s rays turn the sand to a Caribbean-like white. So, it’s no wonder everyone flocks to Newquay at this time of year! If this is the season that you’re planning on visiting, then keep reading to find out what Newquay has to offer in the Summer time.
Beaches
With seven beautiful beaches to choose from, what better time of year to make the most of them. The main beaches in Newquay include Newquay Harbour, Towan, Great Western, Tolcarne, Porth and Fistral. These are just the beaches located in the town and often get quite crowded in the peak of the season. So why not try one of the other beautiful beaches located a few miles out of Newquay? Like Porth, Watergate, Crantock and Holywell. No matter how busy it is, you’ll never be stuck for a spot on the beach when there’s so many amazing beaches to choose from!
Water Sports
If you’re looking for something a bit more active, why not get in the water! Newquay is renowned for its surfing, so what a better opportunity to take a surf lesson? No need to worry if you’ve never done it before as most of the surf schools in Newquay cater to all abilities! If you’re looking for something a bit different you can go on a jet ski safari, coasteering, paddle boarding… The possibilities are endless with a different surf school or adventure centre on every beach, and in a town surrounded by the ocean!
Go to an Outdoor Attraction
If you’re looking for something to do other than the beach but you still want to be outside in the sunshine, how about a trip to one of Newquay’s outdoor attractions? You can head to Newquay Zoo to get up close to some of the worlds most endangered species, go to Lappa Valley Steam Railway if the kids want to ride a real steam train. There’s an outdoor attraction for every member of the family here in Newquay.
Autumn
Ahhh Autumn. The crowds are dispersing, the colours of the trees are changing to darker shades of orange and red, the weather is getting cooler and all the kids have gone back to school! It’s the second most popular time of year to visit Newquay, and we can understand why. Here are our top tips of things to do in the Autumn season in Newquay.
Go for a Walk in the Woods
It’s the perfect time of year for a welly walk in the woods. We recommend Cardinham! Take your time to admire the colours of the tall trees and falling leaves, follow fun trails with the kids and grab a hot chocolate to-go from the cottages to keep you warm whilst you wander! All just a 30 minute drive from Newquay.
Get a Hot Chocolate at the Bowgie
The Bowgie Inn, perched on wild West Pentire headland, is the perfect place to warm up in the Autumn season! With unrivalled views over stunning Crantock Beach, mouth-watering Sunday roasts, famous Bowgie hot chocolates and over 25 Cornish Gins to sip your way through, let the cold weather beGIN! Think blustery beach walks, yummy roasts, mouth-watering hot drinks, wave watching, cosy afternoons and SO much more at the Bowgie Inn.
Winter
Last, but not least, the quietest time of year in Newquay… Winter. Now don’t be fooled, just because not so many people come here in the Winter, doesn’t mean it isn’t just as beautiful or interesting as any other season! Think dramatic storms and waves, cosy pub meals, windy coastal walks and probably the best time of year for events. You’ll also find the accommodation is much cheaper than any other season, although book in advance as a lot of places do close for Winter.
Go Storm Watching!
There’s no need to fear a downpour in Newquay, as it has some of the most spectacular view points for storm watching! All in the comfort of a fancy hotel or cosy pub. The Bowgie Inn and Lewinnick Lodge are some of our top recommendations, as each are perched on the cliff side with mesmerizing coastal views. You’ll feel like you’re right in the middle of all the action yet sat by the warmth of a fire with a hot drink. Bliss!
A trip to Newquay has got to be at the top of your Christmas list if you’re looking to go away in the Winter time. Full of festive cheer,
Well, there you have it! Something to see and do in every season. Now you know that Newquay isn’t just a Summer destination, and you’ll always find something to do whatever the time of year you choose to visit us in lovely Newquay.
