And instead of Sir Kenneth Branagh and Dame Judi Dench, the cast are a bunch of amateurs trying to save their theatre from developers. Jefferson’s monstrous ego, vanity and insecurity are tested to the limit by the enthusiastic am-dram thespians.
As acting worlds collide and Jefferson’s career implodes, he discovers some truths about himself – along with his inner Lear!

What makes a masterpiece?
Serge has bought a painting. To him it’s a modern classic. But to Marc, the self-proclaimed “man apart”, it’s just a “white painting tarted up with a few off-white stripes”. Their long-suffering sidekick Yvan just wants everyone to get along. Is the difference of opinion worth destroying a twenty-year friendship?
These are the questions at the heart of Yasmina Reza’s “Art”: a brutal and hilarious examination of the delicate balance of male friendship and rampant egos.

A little bit of Theatre History
1980 saw the Society acquire the old Lane Village Hall and begin the process of transforming the almost derelict building into the excellent venue we enjoy today, presenting plays continually since that date with facilities including a 138 seat auditorium, The Cosy Nook bar, Green Room lounge, ample free parking and disabled access.
1999 saw a substantial Arts Council (National Lottery) grant which enabled major improvements for the comfort of both our audiences and actors to take place and the refurbished building was opened by our Honorary Patron, Phillip Schofield on 3rd September 2000. Further grants and loans have provided funds for a continual programme of upgrades.
Eric Chappell, writer of such classics as Rising Damp, Duty Free and Only When I Laugh, was holidaying in Cornwall when he learned that we were performing one of his plays. Arriving unannounced, he was so delighted with the standard of the production that we have since staged two world premieres of his plays, subsequently published by Concord (Samuel French Ltd).
A Who’s Who of Newquay Dramatic Society
Newquay Dramatic Society is run entirely by unpaid volunteers. A committee is elected at the AGM usually held in January to serve in office for the coming year.
